My Digital Jukebox

During my trip back home to Nusa Subang from KLIA airport recently, my brother showed me this portable hard disk player he bought to be coupled with his TFT screen mounted on the middle of the car’s roof. He proudly said that it was a Korean technology (Sarotech) “a bit high end” and much better compared to one of those China made player they sold in Lelong. A portable player -(depends on your how much you’re willing to spent on the storage!) hmm…that could be handy if to be use during traveling — immediately I know I am desperately need one of those!!
So having a month worth of vacation ( also while waiting for Nokia to bank in my next salary :) ) I started my search for a portable multimedia player. After looking around at lelong and ebay, this TVIX M-4000PA really caught my eye — love at first sight!

Check the specifications :-

Cool? At first I was considering to build my own DIY multimedia box with my mini-itx
but later decided to use the mini-itx for other purpose (1-wire weather
, my cisco lab etc etc) and this TViX stuff just need to be next to my
TV permanently !
How much does it cost ? I bought it at RM850 and the 500GB cost me another RM480 ( I have a huge collection of DVDs!!)

In Malaysia you can find the list of reseller here elsewhere check here

Some photos of the T ViX.

Having this setup, the next task is to fill the HDD with multimedia
files. You can just transfer all your photos, mp3s, DViX movies (and
other supported formats) via USB and if you find difficulties
converting some DVDs into ISO you might consider using DVD Encrypter .
I have not fully use the “network” and the PVR features of the TViX , still waiting for the right time when I move to a new “wired” house coming October :)

  1. Can you guest what OS it running on?
Got it.. it runs on Linux.

Ever tried to nmap to the box :) ?

  2. I always knew it is running in Linux :) But never thought of doing the nmap thing – maybe soon.
Recently went to sole distributor of mini-itx in Malaysia – those guy proudly show his “hacked” mini-itx for CARPC running Windows with some GPS software tak ingat apa.. then he said he can do 3G connection to handphone too .. alamak very lame laa.. if he just install linux there are tons of apps can be installed and faster too :)

  3. The T vix is too expensive-not worth. if buy this T vix round Rm1500, I would recommend buy one xbox for less than Rm500, you will have a harddisk media player that play more file than the D vix. Xbox media center can support even chinese font, play rmvb/ rm file that not support by the d vix. which most of the download file movie are all rm/rmvb file. Futhermore xbox are ready ship with harddisk and dvd rom drive. you can install 250g of harddisk. You can play the xbox game as games console. install meme and other emulator, can play others famous arcade games. xbox even have lan connection that you can used it to browes insternet and install of linux system which work like a linux pc. Xbox even have a usb slot which can add others usb device such as external harddrive or tumbdrive.

  4. Thanks jb! But take note that xbox is not a one time investment – later I have to buy the expensive games tons of them.
Being a father of 4 children, having another console (after PS2,PSP and DS) which I always try to avoid would indulged me (again!) in my own virtual world of games.
Hehe but anyway and fyi, I do have the intention to buy (either WII,Xbox or PS3) but until now I am decided, I told my son perhaps I will get one of them for his next birthday October 2008 hopefully by that time the price will drop by half or could be as cheap as the PS2 now. :)
