    Saving WRT54G

    Posted in: wireless

One week after passing the RHCE, I decided to upgrade my Linux box to Centos 4.0.
It was not easy – (I survive the installation :) ) the downloading
process which took days~ mainly due to the unstable connection on my WRT54G.
Kept on disconnect every hour most likely due to some interference . I
suspected it was probably due to foreign wireless station had the same
channel(default channel 6)  but then when tested by Netstumbler
it was using 1 not as what I suspected. Hmm.. interesting , could it be
due to the 3G signal from the indoor BTS inside the data center?

One of my solution to the problem was a simple restart to the AP but
that was only temporary solution. It kept on disconnect every now and
then and people started to complain why it happened that frequent.
Darn! Yup! I am the one who proposed the AP later bought it from Low
Yatt  so by default I am the one responsible for any problem with
    the AP.
Later I decided to upgrade the firmware to the latest  version
~3.0.36 and it worked OK for a while and before disconnected again.
Ouch! Found this Linksysinfo.org  with a huge collection of unoffical wrt54g firmware ( I love open source!) to choose from.
Reading from DSL Report I decided to give the Alchemy 1.0  a
try. Half way updating the new firmware (wirelessly) I was disconnected
and found out later the AP now is a useless brick! There is no way that
I can get the Setup Page even though I can ping the machine after reset
    it to the factory default.
Thank Allah I found this website from Google . All I need was a screwdriver (found one inside my bag) and some courage to void the warranty .

After put back the firmware to Alchemy , it works fine for a while (my iso was downloaded) thanks to this article  ( do add -c after wget!) before the problem started again!
