Brief History of Nearly Nothing!

Kids are full of surprises -never failed to amaze me on how  fast they learn things or even how fast they pick up new lines .
On a recent regular drive from the Jumaat prayer at the mosque nearby – heading home, I asked Imran whether he knows the way back to our home Cordoba .Should I turn left or right ?

Obviously he was not interested to talk about it, (his mind was more focused to the ice-cream I promised to buy for him at the compound supermaket) so  I said it was just a  simple  test for him and as it will  be part of learning process. ‘No abah,  I don’t like test, test is only for school!’ argued him. And I said ‘Imran .. you should always learn anywhere you go – remember bla bla bla .. when you’re small bla bla .. its part of  learning’ .‘Learning is not only for school OK..’

And he goes –"Abah, you’re making me bezonkers!"
    What was that ? Bezonkers?
Where did he learn those "bezonkers" word? I can’t  recall anytime that me or ummi using it, indeed it was not part of my (limited)  vocabulary. Did he  become smarter than I am ? Naaaa..! Though I knew he is definitely smarter than me at his age now. (I cheated during a spelling test at Standard 1 because I just couldn’t spell "FISH"! )

So for the x times  of the week, I asked my Imran – "Where did you pick up those words?"
From school? As usual he said , from  "this" cartoon he watched at "this"  TV channel.

Media such TV, internet  has big influence to their audience. Check this .
It can also be used as a  useful learning tool .

    * Human  can invent a chess playing computer like Deep Blue  who can beat Kasparov but still failed to beat the intelligence of a 4 year kids in   recognizing images or even understanding  language.

Ferdaus  brought this issue to ITTutor.net  with a diagram . Picture speaks a thousand words :) – every Malays (I believe) aware about this issue.
Please click here to discuss about it.
Personally , (like other concerned Malays!) I think Akademi Fantasia is a serious social epidemic . Should it be banned?
    But would it be effective?

My idea is — we should start another epidemic for the youth, something that would overwrite/counter all this ..
Malcolm Gladwell in his book Tipping Point (How Little Things Can Make a Big Difference)  wrote about the human behaviour that can be changed/triggered  by the so called epidemics. Even small ideas can triggered something big , spread like virus at the national level. His studies supported by few examples such as the resurgence of this Hush Puppies shoes brought by a  group of teenage boys at one part of the country but later  spread at national level. OK, maybe it sounds too easy, but who knows by Allah will we can start one! But then how?

    Hmm..

A student at MMU already started one . A simple idea no rocket science , what he did was to add Quran features into PSP . Now we have a portable Quran at the hand of  youths that would be carried anywhere they  go. Implementation? Up to creativity of parents -of course, parent had to play some roles on this. say a rule – for every game played they have to recite few verses of Quran. Cool isn’t it? Thats the whole idea, its cool to read Quran  :)

Also stated in the news article he was said to be inspired by the same concept designed for Bible in PSP. And I thought-  for my friends at  ITTutor.net who  were always comparing/arguing/flaming to  what Linux/Microsoft did to compete with each other, why not we start  looking at what other people did to spread their dakwah? Islamic Web 2.0 apps?

    * Additional to that , being a parent I am also learning how to raise my children. According to a  research in ScienceDaily , it is proven that "Kids with religious parents are better behaved and adjusted than other children" .Being a Muslim, this findings are not new to us.

My question to myself is today — "How religous am I?"   Hmm…

One of the things I always wanted to do (other than learning to swim haha!) is to challenge myself  to write  program. I already bought few books ever since, one of them  is this other than some Delphi books that I bought ~ 10 years ago. (We  learnt Turbo Pascal at UMIST and a friend of mine said I should try Delphi!)

    Mop_2
But, today I found about  this Realbasic software from a list of cool GPL+free+demo Windows list that I have been browsing for so many days now (its a huge list and I can’t afford to download them all!). Realbasic sounds cool – it was said to be very easy to learn for a programmer wannabe like me+  it  also works with Windows, Linux and Mac too!

Nothing much to be said , the downloading  is still on progress at 40% now…
